The Arizona Republic printed an article on Online Dating Sites [Wednesday, March 21, 2012] and the request for such sites to screen for predators. Last year an estimated 40 million Americans used an online dating service and spent more than $1 billion on dating website membership according to the attorney general’s office.

Three of the largest online dating sites (Match.com, eHarmony and Spark Networks) all agreed to screen for predators after a California woman was assaulted on a date. The unidentified woman went on a date with Alan Wurtzel who had a string of previous convictions for sexual battery.

The woman sued Match.com in a lawsuit which sought a court order to have the dating service screen applicants backgrounds to weed out convicted sexual offenders, and dropped the lawsuit when it was clear that the site will provide such screening.

The three giant dating sites signed a joint statement of business principles intended to set an example for all other dating sites and the online dating industry to help guard subscribers from sexual predators, identity theft and financial scams.

In their statement, they agreed to check subscribers against national sex offender registries and to supply online dating safety tips. In addition, they will provide a quick way for abuses to be reported.

According to Federal Laws Prohibiting Job Discrimination potential employers are not allowed to ask interview questions of you that reveal:

Yet on March 21, 2012 USA Today published an article in which a job seeker, Justin Bassett, got more than the usual interview questions. Bassett was astonished when the interviewer asked him for his Facebook Username and Password.

“It’s akin to requiring someone’s house keys,” said Orin Kerr, a George Washington University law professor and former federal prosecutor who calls it “an egregious privacy violation.”

While it has becoming more and more popular for job interviewers to look for and review your social media profiles (Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, etc.). Now the interviewers have gone one step further, and frankly over the line, by asking for the usernames and passwords of candidates whose profiles are marked “private.”

Some companies have not been quite as blatant about asking for passwords, instead they have been requesting that the candidate “friend” them on the social networks. Potato, po-taa-to… it is still an invasion of personal rights.

If interviewers are not allowed to ask profiling questions per Federal regulations as outlined above, how can they possibly think asking for private passwords and logins to private social media profiles is okay? Literally, do they really want to be your “friend?”

There are questions currently being raised about the legality of this; Illinois and Maryland have proposed legislation underway that would forbid public agences from asking for a candidate’s access to social networks.

Bassett refused to give his login information to the interviewer, but some people, more desperate for a job have complied to these requests of potential employers.

5 People Ejected from Vehicle in Rollover Crash

About an hour ago five people were ejected from a vehicle which rolled over on Northbound Loop 101 in Tempe. Seven people were in the vehicle and two remained trapped inside.

Details are not immediately available about the extent of injuries.
